Il folksinger dei due mondi ha la stessa barba di
Garibaldi, ma parla l’inglese dolce delle vecchie
ballate del Midwest e accarezza la chitarra come
i grandi della musica a stelle e strisce. Parrebbe
un perfetto americano, se non avesse il nome
italiano del momento («di Beppe Grillo si parla
molto pure oltreoceano») e una casa a Castelletto
dove tornare per qualche mese l’anno, quando Genova
è troppo bella per stare altrove e in New Jersey
«il basilico che abbiamo in giardino non cresce
come dovrebbe».
Beppe Gambetta l’anno della cultura italiana in
America lo festeggia tutti gli anni da tempo: almeno
da quando ha deciso di trasferirsi con la
compagna Federica nel piccolo paese di Stockton,
nei boschi della contea di Hunterdon (NJ), quartier
generale da cui partire per i suoi tour in giro
per il globo e preparare i ritorni sul mare di casa.
A 57 anni è sempre lo stesso formidabile chitarrista
da strada «malato di “dromomania”, ossessionato
dal viaggio e dal bisogno di stare on the road»
e non fatica a dividere in due il suo cuore di

with a Midwestern twang, and he caresses his
guitar, as only the great musicians of the Stars and
Stripes do. You would think that he was the archetype
American, if it weren’t for his trendy Italian name
(“you hear a lot being said about Beppe Grillo now on
the other side of the Atlantic”) and his house in
Castelletto where he returns for a few months a year.
When Genoa is too beautiful to be elsewhere. And
when in New Jersey the heat becomes crushing, and
“the basil in our garden doesn’t grow properly”.
Beppe Gambetta has been celebrating the Year of
Italian Culture in America for quite some time now. At
least ever since he decided to move, with his
companion, Federica, to the little town of Stockton in
the woods of Hunterdon County (NJ) and to make it
his headquarters from where he tours the globe… and
prepares his return to home, on the sea.
At 57, he is still the formidable guitarist of the road.
Stricken with “moving sickness”, as he explains,
“obsessed with traveling, with the need to be on the
