Let me conclude with an
anecdote. Perhaps not all know
that in Sanremo, at Villa Ormond,
there is an institute, the
International Institute for Human
Rights, which is the destination
for scholars from all over the
world. In 1995, ten years after
Calvino’s death, I was setting up a
space there for my exhibition
“From the Depths of the Opaque,
I Write” on Italo Calvino’s
landscape, a work that then went
inconciliabili per il giovane
Italo, ma che, in seguito,
quando è adulto, si uniscono e
trovano una loro armonia
narrativa.
Come un Marco Polo del
Novecento, desidera andar via
dalla sua città - Sanremo - e
attraversare tutte le città
possibili. Marco Polo, non a
caso, è il protagonista delle
Città invisibili. Calvino lascia
infatti la Liguria per sempre
dopo la Seconda Guerra
Mondiale, per trasferirsi prima a
Torino, poi a Parigi e Roma.
Concludo con un aneddoto.
Forse non tutti sanno che a
Sanremo, a Villa Ormond, esiste
l’Istituto Internazionale di
Diritto Umanitario, meta di
studiosi di tutto il mondo. Nel
1995, dieci anni dopo la morte
di Calvino, stavo allestendo in
quello spazio la prima versione
della mia mostra “Dal fondo
dell’opaco io scrivo” sul
paesaggio di Italo Calvino, un
lavoro che ha fatto il giro del
mondo. Non certo per merito
mio, ma per l’universalità e il
potere comunicativo dell’opera
calviniana. Nel 1999 è stata
ospitata alla New York
University, dove ho conosciuto
la vedova Esther e la figlia
Giovanna, che nella città
americana ha scelto di vivere.
Un regalo più bello non me lo
potevano fare, con la loro
presenza e il loro calore.
Ebbene, tornando a Villa
Ormond, in quei giorni, prima
dell’inaugurazione, c’era un
simposio sui diritti umanitari.
Un signore americano mi chiede
che mostra sto allestendo. Gli
spiego che è su Italo Calvino.
Non mi ha più mollato, l’ho
dovuto portare in giro per la
città a scoprire i luoghi
calviniani.
Ebbene, sono passati quasi
trent’anni dalla sua morte e a
Sanremo, a parte qualche targa,
qualche scuola e il lungomare a
lui intitolati, poche tracce di
Italo Calvino. Diverse giunte,
on tour across the world. Not
because of me, certainly, but
because of the universal appeal
and communicative power that
Calvino had. In 1999 it reached
the University of New York, where
I met his widow, Esther, and
daughter, Giovanna, who had
chosen to live in that American
city. It was a beautiful gift for me
to have them present and feel
their warmth.
And so, I returned to Villa
Ormond, where in those days
before the inauguration, a
symposium on human rights was
being held. An American me
asked me about the subject of my
exhibition. When I explained that
it was on Italo Calvino, he would
not let me go, I had to take him
around Sanremo to show him
Calvino’s places.
Well, almost thirty years had
passed since Calvino’s death, and
in Sanremo, apart from a few
plaques, there was little trace of
Calvino. Various administrations,
over the years, have asked me to
design projects on him, but all
remained on paper, or in the
waste bin of some computer.
Will Sanremo ever be able to find
a little space to dedicate to a
studies center on him They
would come running from all over
the world if it was done, and
managed well. It could represent,
symbolically, that last American
lesson that was never written,
which was to have been
dedicated to Consistency. Perhaps
to permanence, to memory.
Sanremo will continue to jump
out of his books, “in its various
views and perspectives, above all
seen from above...very present in
the many invisible cities.” We are
not inventing anything. And Italo
Calvino himself declared his deep
ties to the city. This is the phrase
that I would like to see written
above the entrance to the Italo
Calvino Studies Center, which
now more than ever – in the
times of cut budgets and
spending reviews - will never be
inaugurated in Sanremo.

negli anni, mi hanno chiesto di
elaborare dei progetti, tutti
rimasti in chissà quali cassetti o
finiti nel cestino di chissà quale
computer.
Riuscirà mai Sanremo a trovare
anche un piccolo spazio per
aprire un centro studi a lui
dedicato Accorrerebbero da
tutto il mondo, se fosse ben
gestito. Potrebbe rappresentare,
simbolicamente, l’ultima lezione
americana mai scritta, quella
che doveva essere dedicata
alla Consistenza, forse al
permanere, alla memoria.
«Sanremo continua a saltar

vista dall’alto, ed è soprattutto
presente in molte delle città
invisibili»: non ci stiamo
inventando niente, è lui stesso a
aver dichiarato questo profondo
legame. Questa frase la vorrei
leggere all’ingresso del Centro
Studi Italo Calvino, che ora più
che mai - ai tempi della
spending review - non verrà mai
inaugurato a Sanremo.
