Comincia qui, dalle “Colonne d’Ercole”, il leggendario viaggio del capitano Tarabotto e del suo equipaggio, che 4 giorni, 13 ore e 58 minuti dopo raggiungeranno New York, guadagnando l’ambito “Nastro Azzurro” per il record di attraversamento dell’Atlantico, a una velocità media di 28,92 nodi. A ottant’anni da quell’impresa, l’Autorità Portuale di Genova celebra la più grande nave passeggeri di linea italiana dell’epoca con la mostra “Transatlantico Rex, il mito e la memoria”, tra modelli, fotografie, oggetti, grafica pubblicitaria e filmati orginali tratti dall’Archivio Storico Ansaldo. Il “varo” dell’esposizione, curata da Paolo Piccione, è previsto martedì 9 aprile 2013 a Palazzo San Giorgio (ci resterà fino al settembre prossimo). Dopodiché la mostra volerà nella Grande Mela, dove sarà visitabile nei mesi di novembre e dicembre. Ma il Rex è solo l’antenato più illustre di una vera e propria epopea che, a cavallo tra Otto e Novecento, ha trasformato l’idea stessa del viaggiare per mare, dai primi viaggi a vapore alla migrazione di massa verso l’America, fino all’ultima stagione delle crociere transoceaniche. It was a warm August morning in 1933. The sky was blue without a cloud in sight, when the steamship, the Rex, set sail from the port of Genoa on route for Gibraltar. But, once it passed the “Columns of Hercules”, the race against the clock began. On the legendary voyage of the Rex, Capitan Tarabotto and his crew crossed the ocean in 4 days, 13 hours, and 58 minutes to win the “<strong>Blue</strong> Ribbon of the Atlantic”, reaching New York with an average speed of 28.92 knots. Eighty years later, the Port Authority of Genoa celebrates the greatest Italian oceanliner of the times with the exhibition, Transatlantico Rex, il mito e la memoria (the legend and the memories) with models, photographs, objects, advertising graphics, and original films from the Ansaldo Historic Archives. The “launch” of the exhibition, with Paolo Piccione as curator, is planned for April 9, 2013 at the Palazzo San Giorgio (where it will remain until September). After that, the show will fly to the Big Apple, where it can be seen for the months of November and December. But the Rex was just the most illustrious character in a true epic which, straddling the 19 th and 20 th Century, transformed the concept of sea voyages. The first steamships led to mass migration to the Americas, and on, up to the last season of the oceanliners. 58
