lue interview Colombo, primo Ammiraglio del Mar Oceano the First Admiral of the Ocean Seas Figlio di un lanaiolo della Fontanabuona, il navigatore protetto dai papi liguri e dai clan familiari interessati a trovare nuovi mercati, a 14 anni viaggia già nell’Atlantico. Ma sarà la giovane America a erigergli le prime statue e a creare nel 1792 il Columbus Day, mentre l’Italia e l’Europa lo faranno solo un secolo dopo Columbus - son of a Ligurian wool-maker, navigator protected by Ligurian Popes, emigrant connected to clans seeking new markets - at age 14 was already sailing the Atlantic. But it was young America who raised the first monuments to him, creating in 1792 the first Columbus Day, and Italy only 100 years later Gabriella Airaldi Re, in età giovanissima cominciai a navigare e continuo ancor «Eccellentissimi oggi. Legato ai grandi Excellency the King of Spain, at a very young age I began sailing, and I continue to “Your do so still. The same art induces he who follows it to desire to learn the secrets of the world. Over forty years I have been practicing this art. I have traveled all the routes that are known to man. I have had conversations with and heard reports from people who are learned - clerics and laymen, Latins and Greeks, Hebrews and Saracens, and many others…” So writes Columbus in 1501 as he petitions the most Holy Catholic Kings. And to the Protectors of the Bank of San Giorgio in Genoa in 1502, “Though my body is here my heart is there continuously…” There exists among Ligurians a knowledge of the world, which makes them adapt to every type of life without however ever renouncing their own. Born in a region on the periphery of the Italian peninsula, which though, forms an essential part of the western part of Western Europe. A region open to the sea, with a dense network of roads and communication, but poor in prime materials and fertile countryside. A region whose people since the beginning of time have been ready to be warriors and not just merchants. Ligurians of all social classes have often left their land. In medieval times the opportunities offered by the greatest port in the Mediterranean and the precocious start of capitalism spread Ligurians across the world in the wake of that great network of family companies which were “the column of the international republic of money”. Born from this system, and promoted by a free city-state, and decided upon crossing all frontiers, is the curiosity of which Columbus speaks. That which will lead, fatally, to the “discovery”.
