La celebre canzone di Dean Martin che celebra pizza e tarantella è il simbolo
di un fenomeno significativo: molte delle star della canzone americana hanno
avuto o hanno antenati italiani emigrati negli Stati Uniti, da Perry Como
a Madonna, da Frank Sinatra a Bruce Springsteen

Chi sono costoro” Allora aggiungiamo due
persone alla lista, anch’esse per come furono registrate
all’anagrafe: Louise Veronica Ciccone e
Francis Albert Sinatra.
L’ultimo cognome della serie svela il gioco. E forse
fa rammentare come siano più noti gli altri
cinque: Frankie Laine, Perry Como, Dean Martin,
Connie Francis, Madonna. Non basta Ultimo
tocco – in questo breve elenco di star evergreen
della musica legate a doppio filo all’emigrazione
italiana negli States – un altro nome estratto dai
registri anagrafici, quello di Adel Ann Zirilli, una
signora con i genitori di Vico Equense, provincia
di Napoli, e mamma del grandissimo Bruce
Springsteen.
Basta e avanza per testimoniare quanto sia lunga
e stellare la colonna sonora che per quasi un
secolo ha accompagnato il fenomeno degli italiani
approdati in Nord America in cerca di fortuna,
regalando a tutto il mondo interpreti da
sogno, e – di ritorno – al nostro Paese motivi ulteriori
di orgoglio, da affiancare ai cosiddetti
“cervelli fuggiti” e divenuti protagonisti nelle
scienze, nella tecnologia e nella managerialità.
I nomi parlano chiaro.
Le storie personali raccontano di un Dean Martin
pugile e benzinaio prima del successo, così
come pugile e poi vigile del fuoco fu il papà di
Sinatra, di un Perry Como promettente barbiere
fino a ventun anni d’età. Ma come non trovare
Francesco Lo Vecchio, Pierino Como, Dino
Crocetti, Concetta Rosa Maria Franconero… if I

“And so”. And so let me add two others to the list,
just as if they were registering to vote: Louise
Veronica Ciccone and Francis Albert Sinatra. Ah
hah, the last name tells all.
And maybe it makes us recall another famous five:
Frankie Laine, Perry Como, Dean Martin, Connie
Francis, and Madonna. Is that enough A last touch
– in this brief list of music stars that stay ever green
tied to a double line of Italian emigration to the
United States – there is yet another name to be
pulled out of the hat, Adel Ann Zirilli whose parents
came from Vico Equense near Naples, and whose
son is the great Bruce Springsteen.
This should be enough to bear evidence of the long
soundtrack filled with stars which for almost a
century now has accompanied the phenomenon of
Italians who land in North America in search of
fortune. They gave the world their gift, the
interpretation of their dreams, and gave back to
Italy a motive for pride. Pride in their achievements
as in those of the “brain drain”, the leaders in
science, technology, management, who left Italy,
never to return.
The names speak for themselves. The story of Dean
Martin, first a boxer and a gas station attendant,
before he made a name for himself. Another boxer,
later a fireman, was Frank Sinatra’s father. Perry
Como was on the road to becoming a barber until
the age of 21. But how can we find in their success
the reminiscences, the nostalgia, and a never-
