NEUROPSYCHIATRIC MANIFESTATIONS IN PATIENTS WITH SYSTEMIC LUPUS
ERYTHEMATOSUS

Neuropsychiatric Manifestations exhibit themselves in the majority of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (NP-
SLE) patients. NP-SLE manifests itself in all parts of the patients’ nervous system. Multiple factors contribute to
the pathogenesis of this disease. Timely diagnosis of nervous system lesions in SLE patients requires a team
approach that employs clinical as well as all other available methods, including electrophysiological and
visualization testing, and neuropsychological evaluation. The therapeutic approach is determined by the presence of
particular clinical manifestations. Further controlled studies are needed in order to develop our understanding of
the optimal clinical protocols for SLE patients with neuropsychiatric manifestations. Clinicians are faced with
determining clinical reliability of various methods for CNS and PNS analysis for the diagnosis of Neurolupus in
SLE patients. They also must evaluate the course and complexity of these manifestations and find a corresponding
therapeutic treatment.
