ORTHOSES FOR PATIENTS WITH RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS
BRANISLAV BOBIĆ
Orthoses are appliances that are used to replace the damaged or lost function and they have a
significant position in a complex therapeutic procedure/protocol in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. As
this inflammatory rheumatoid disease causes most often the loss of function of hands and after that of
locomotion, the orthotic appliances for the hand and foot function and walk are of special significance.
Their prescribing is individual and it depends on functional evaluation of each patient in comparison to
the remaining capacities. Their application can also serve in preventive and therapeutic purposes in
different disease stages, in particular in improvement of daily life activities, which affects significantly
the increased quality of life of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. It can be noted that this aspect in
therapeutic procedure/protocol has not attracted sufficient attention of doctors at clinics in the previous
practice and that is why the aim of this paper is to draw the attention to the possibility of substitution in
the process of functional incapacitating, in addition to the more often used possibility of compensation.
