CREATION.<br />

The third passage is contained in a poem of the 12th cent,<br />

on the four Gospels (Diemer 320, 6-20 ; conf. the notes to 95,<br />

18. 27, and 320, 6) :<br />

Got m<strong>it</strong> siner gewalt<br />

der wrchet zeichen vil manecvalt,<br />

der worhte den mennischen einen<br />

iizzen von aid teilen :<br />

von dem leime gab er ime daz fleiscli,<br />

der tow becechen<strong>it</strong> den sweihc (sweat),<br />

von dem steine gab er im daz pein (bone),<br />

des nist zwivil nehein (is no doubt),<br />

von den wrcen (worts) gab er ime di adren (veins),<br />

von dem grase gab er ime daz liar,<br />

von dem mere gab er ime daz plut (blood),<br />

von den wolchen (clouds) daz mut (mood, mind),<br />

Lastly, I take a passage from Godfrey of V<strong>it</strong>erbo s Pantheon,<br />

c which was finished in 1187 (Pistorii Scriptor. 2,53): Cum<br />

legimus Adam de limo terrae formatum, intelligendum est ex<br />

quatuor elementis. mundus enim iste major ex quatuor elementis<br />

constat,igne, aere, aqua et terra, humanum quoque corpus dic<strong>it</strong>ur<br />

microcosmus, id est minor mundus. habet nanique<br />

ex terra<br />

carnem, ex aqua humores, ex aere flatum, ex igne calorem. caput<br />

autem ejus est rotundum sicut coelum, in quo duo sunt oculi, tanquam<br />
