truth. ….. My problem is roughly this: What are <strong>the</strong> rules <strong>of</strong> right that power<br />

implements to produces discourses <strong>of</strong> truth? Or: What type <strong>of</strong> power is it that is<br />

capable <strong>of</strong> producing discourses <strong>of</strong> truth that have, in a society like ours, such<br />

powerful effects? [Foucault, 2003, p24].<br />

From a Foucauldian perspective, <strong>discipline</strong>s are invariably associated with power <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

right. The right are established by <strong>the</strong> exercise <strong>of</strong> power and <strong>the</strong> endeavour to exercise<br />

power to ascertain truth effects.<br />

2.1.3.06 How does Foucault’s Triangle in Graphic 2b relate to <strong>the</strong> <strong>discipline</strong>s and<br />

discourses outlined in Model A in Graphic 2a in <strong>the</strong> previous section? Figuratively I would<br />

imagine a metal pendulum on a string with its fulcrum at power and range <strong>of</strong> swing<br />

between <strong>the</strong> markers <strong>of</strong> ‘Truth Effects’ and ‘Right’. ‘Truth Effects’ being <strong>the</strong> ‘discourses<br />

<strong>of</strong> truth’ and ‘Right’ being <strong>the</strong> <strong>discipline</strong>. Movements between <strong>the</strong>se markers caused by<br />

changes relating to <strong>the</strong> acceptability <strong>of</strong> knowledge (described in section 2.2.3 below), and<br />

<strong>the</strong> exercise <strong>of</strong> power, relating to such acceptability, cause <strong>the</strong> pendulum to be pulled in<br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r direction. (<strong>the</strong> influences on, and <strong>the</strong> movement <strong>of</strong>, <strong>the</strong> pendulum, will be discussed<br />

in more detail in 2.3.2.) A pencil attached to <strong>the</strong> pendulum could mark <strong>the</strong> defining line<br />

between <strong>the</strong> <strong>discipline</strong> and <strong>the</strong> discourse: between that knowledge, from <strong>the</strong> discourse,<br />

which is acceptably included in <strong>the</strong> <strong>discipline</strong> and that which is excluded.<br />

2.1.3.07 Foucault discusses <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se exclusions at two different time periods,<br />

1971 and 1976. While <strong>the</strong> general principles <strong>of</strong> exclusion are <strong>the</strong> same <strong>the</strong>re is a subtle<br />

shift in <strong>the</strong> role <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>discipline</strong> in Foucault’s ideas. In 1971 <strong>the</strong> <strong>discipline</strong> was included as<br />

an exclusion internal to a discourse, while in 1976 <strong>the</strong> <strong>discipline</strong> has taken on a greater<br />

identity (similar to <strong>the</strong> <strong>discipline</strong> in Mode l A) where it regulates knowledge.<br />
