2.3.1.04 As much as <strong>the</strong> physical laws control <strong>the</strong> motion <strong>of</strong> planetary bodies and <strong>the</strong><br />
flow <strong>of</strong> tides, <strong>the</strong> same, according to Leibniz, can be said <strong>of</strong> metaphysical principles <strong>of</strong><br />
ideas and knowledge. Whe<strong>the</strong>r it is <strong>the</strong> force <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gravitas that has moved <strong>the</strong> <strong>discipline</strong><br />
into acceptance or <strong>the</strong> attraction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gravitas has made <strong>the</strong> knowledge more acceptable<br />
to <strong>the</strong> <strong>discipline</strong> and by including <strong>the</strong> previously unaccepted knowledge <strong>the</strong> <strong>discipline</strong><br />
seeks to enlarge its own gravitas, is a moot point. Whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> exclus ionary forces <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>academic</strong> gatekeepers are greater than <strong>the</strong> gravitas <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> author <strong>of</strong>fering <strong>the</strong> unaccepted<br />
knowledge is anot her conside ration. What would happen if <strong>the</strong> unaccepted knowledge did<br />
not acquire <strong>the</strong> patronage <strong>of</strong> an author with sufficient gravitas to make it become<br />
acceptable? Would <strong>the</strong> unaccepted knowledge eventually find its way into <strong>the</strong> <strong>discipline</strong> or<br />
would it, due to <strong>the</strong> exclusionary resistance experienced, find its way into ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />
<strong>discipline</strong>? As discussed in section 2.1.4.10, <strong>the</strong> question <strong>of</strong> who decides <strong>the</strong> parameters <strong>of</strong><br />
acceptability maybe abo ut what has been constructed by <strong>the</strong> <strong>discipline</strong> through its natural<br />
genesis and evolut ion, as abo ut what has be en attempt ed to be constructed by those in <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>discipline</strong>. The interplay <strong>of</strong> gravitas and exclusionary forces may be <strong>the</strong> deciding aspect.<br />
2.3.1.05 It is possible to visualise <strong>discipline</strong>s along <strong>the</strong> same lines as planetary bod ies, or<br />
magnetized bodies, each with <strong>the</strong>ir powers to attract or reject, to move, subject to forces<br />
acting on <strong>the</strong>m. Model B, in Graphic 2e, shows <strong>the</strong> possible influence <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>discipline</strong>s<br />
on <strong>the</strong> Model A. Discipline B is a <strong>discipline</strong> that shows some compatibility with <strong>the</strong><br />
original <strong>discipline</strong>. For example, <strong>the</strong> <strong>discipline</strong> <strong>of</strong> economics has some compatibility with<br />
<strong>entrepreneurship</strong> as does <strong>the</strong> <strong>discipline</strong> <strong>of</strong> sociology. This compatibility does tend to<br />
discount <strong>the</strong> relevancy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cartesian definition <strong>of</strong> substance (as discussed in 2.1.2.04) as<br />
that ‘which depends on no o<strong>the</strong>r for its own existence’ to a <strong>discipline</strong>. It is unlikely that a<br />
<strong>discipline</strong> has sufficient measure <strong>of</strong> substance to stand by itself. However, as per Leibniz, it<br />
is not necessary for something to have substance to have force.<br />
