Purpose:<br />

The Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for:<br />

• Operating and maintaining over 5,800 acres of park land and 78 park sites.<br />

• Managing the <strong>Kitsap</strong> <strong>County</strong> Fair and Stampede and other regional special events.<br />

• Acquiring and developing property for parks, open space and natural resource preservation.<br />

• Processing over 2,000 facility permits and booking 145,000 hours of facility usage.<br />

• Scheduling, managing and providing facilities and fields for Athletic and Special Event programming.<br />

• Coordinating the use of over 1,000 volunteers and stewardship groups for park and recreation programs.<br />

2008 Accomplishments:<br />

• Began implementation of the Parks Sustainability Task Force Recommendations<br />

• Completed South <strong>Kitsap</strong> Regional Park Master Plan<br />

• Nominated for Rodeo of the Year for the 4 th year in a row<br />

• ESPN coverage of 2008 Stampede and selection as a <strong>2009</strong> Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Silver Rodeo<br />

Tour Stop<br />

• Established 6-year Capital Facility Plan<br />

• Implemented Parks grant strategy<br />

• Received clean grant audit by State Auditor<br />

• Re-established stewardship program and Parks Department Volunteer tracking system<br />

• Began development of financial tracking and performance reporting<br />

• Shifted to regional recreation program provider<br />

• In conjunction with <strong>Kitsap</strong> <strong>County</strong> Juvenile Department, implemented Youth Service Core program<br />

• Restored and repaired damage to 3 park sites damaged by 2007 flood<br />

• Successfully implemented Winter Park Closure Plan at four regional parks<br />

• Completing implementation of the Parks Sustainability Task Force Recommendations<br />

• Selecting and implementing a new reservations system<br />

• Implementing Phase I of the South <strong>Kitsap</strong> Regional Park Master Plan<br />

• Selecting and implementing an online ticketing system<br />

• Developing park maintenance standards<br />

• Developing financial tracking and performance reporting<br />

• Creating written policies and plans<br />

• Developing stewardship opportunities and increasing use of volunteers<br />

• Continuing to work with Sheriff’s Department to reduce vandalism<br />

• Completing Park Code revisions<br />

• Providing successful regional recreational programs<br />
