Purpose:
The Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for:
• Operating and maintaining over 5,800 acres of park land and 78 park sites.
• Managing the Kitsap County Fair and Stampede and other regional special events.
• Acquiring and developing property for parks, open space and natural resource preservation.
• Processing over 2,000 facility permits and booking 145,000 hours of facility usage.
• Scheduling, managing and providing facilities and fields for Athletic and Special Event programming.
• Coordinating the use of over 1,000 volunteers and stewardship groups for park and recreation programs.
2008 Accomplishments:
• Began implementation of the Parks Sustainability Task Force Recommendations
• Completed South Kitsap Regional Park Master Plan
• Nominated for Rodeo of the Year for the 4 th year in a row
• ESPN coverage of 2008 Stampede and selection as a 2009 Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Silver Rodeo

• Established 6-year Capital Facility Plan
• Implemented Parks grant strategy
• Received clean grant audit by State Auditor
• Re-established stewardship program and Parks Department Volunteer tracking system
• Began development of financial tracking and performance reporting
• Shifted to regional recreation program provider
• In conjunction with Kitsap County Juvenile Department, implemented Youth Service Core program
• Restored and repaired damage to 3 park sites damaged by 2007 flood
• Successfully implemented Winter Park Closure Plan at four regional parks

• Completing implementation of the Parks Sustainability Task Force Recommendations
• Selecting and implementing a new reservations system
• Implementing Phase I of the South Kitsap Regional Park Master Plan
• Selecting and implementing an online ticketing system
• Developing park maintenance standards
• Developing financial tracking and performance reporting
• Creating written policies and plans
• Developing stewardship opportunities and increasing use of volunteers
• Continuing to work with Sheriff’s Department to reduce vandalism
• Completing Park Code revisions
• Providing successful regional recreational programs
