Description:<br />

Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment<br />

The <strong>Kitsap</strong> <strong>County</strong> Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Program currently funds comprehensive<br />

programs for alcohol and other drug prevention, treatment and intervention/crisis services. The Substance<br />

Abuse Prevention Program (KCSAAP) utilizes state and federal funding to develop needed substance abuse<br />

prevention resources and to support and assist with the coordination of existing prevention programs and<br />

services for youth, families, schools and communities. <strong>Kitsap</strong> <strong>County</strong> Treatment Services are available for<br />

low income/indigent youth and adults through a network of outpatient contracted state certified agencies.<br />

2008 Accomplishments:<br />

• Increased the number of family members participating in the Strengthening Families Program, an evidence-based<br />

substance abuse prevention program for families with children ages 10-14, from 17 in 2006, 87 in 2007 to 100 in<br />

2008.<br />

• Successfully organized a community-based, substance abuse prevention coalition made up of 12 members<br />

appointed by the <strong>Kitsap</strong> <strong>County</strong> Board of Health and focused on strengthening community collaboration to reduce<br />

youth substance abuse.<br />

• Received a federal grant to support the work of the newly formed community-based, substance abuse prevention<br />

coalition aimed at the reduction of youth substance abuse through more effective community collaboration.<br />

Initiatives:<br />

• The maintenance and enhancement of the <strong>Kitsap</strong> <strong>County</strong> Drug Court along with improving the effectiveness of<br />

treatment programs.<br />

• Expansion of substance prevention abuse prevention activities through participating youth in the community.<br />
