I reached Adana in the evening, expecting to find<br />

it little more than a heap of ruins. The massacre<br />

had taken place three years before, yet since I<br />

left Sams^in scarcely a day had passed on which<br />

I did not hear some reference to the event. But<br />

instead of stagnation and ruin I found shops lit up,<br />

cafes thronged, cotton -mills humming, the streets<br />

crowded, and from the railway station such a rush<br />

of furiously driven cabs as no other Turkish town<br />

can show. I found, in fact, a throbbing town of<br />

100,000 inhabitants, with an unmistakable air of prosperity<br />

and confidence in the future. Compared with<br />

Adana, the cities of the interior—Sivas, Kaisariyeh,<br />

and Konia—were cities in the quietude of decay.
