We’ve found that it appeals to diverse students with varying academic and studyskills, enhancing the learning process without being gimmicky or condescending. Aspecial student preface titled To the Student on pages xliii to xlvi immediately beforeChapter 1 describes the complete pedagogical system and how students canmake the most of it.The pedagogical system has four main components: (1) Advance Organizers,(2) Visual Concept Reviews, (3) Chapter Review, and (4) the Web companion site.Major sections are introduced by an Advance Organizer that identifies the section’sKey Theme followed by a bulleted list of Key Questions. Each Advance Organizermentally primes the student for the important information that is to followand does so in a way that encourages active learning. Students often struggle withtrying to determine what’s important to learn in a particular section or chapter. Asa pedagogical technique, the Advance Organizer provides a guide that directs thestudent toward the most important ideas, concepts, and information in the section. It helps students identify main ideas and distinguish them from supporting evidenceand examples.New to this edition, Concept Maps are visual reviews that encourage studentsto review and check their learning at the end of the chapter. The hierarchical layoutshows how themes, concepts, and facts are related to one another. Chapter photosare included as visual cues to important chapter information.Several other in-chapter pedagogical aids support the Advance Organizers andConcept Reviews. A clearly identified Chapter Outline provides an overview oftopics and organization. Within the chapter, Key Terms are set in boldface type anddefined in the margin. Pronunciation guides are included for difficult or unfamiliarwords. Because students often have trouble identifying the most important theoristsand researchers, names of Key People are set in boldface type within the chapter. We also provide a page-referenced list of Key People and Terms at the end of eachchapter.Beyond the learning aids in the text, every new copy of Discovering Psychologycomes with a free copy of either the Online Study Center or the print Study Guidewritten by Cornelius Rea, Douglas College. Supplementing these materials, theBook Companion Web site contains multiple review activities. At the companionWeb site, each chapter has two 15-question self-scoring practice quizzes, flashcards forrehearsing key terms, and two interactive crossword puzzles. In addition to the companionWeb site, the book is accompanied by some other premium Web materialsincluding PsychPortal, which combines all the electronic resources available for thebook (including the eBook, interactive activities, and quizzing).
