Claiming to be “friendfirst, boss second,” Michael teaches viewersexactly what a manager should not sayor do. In an episode about sexual harassment,for example, Michael reluctantly announcesthat he is giving up all non-workrelatedconversations and jokes, only toimmediately lapse into coarse sexual innuendo.It’s almost as if he studied theworld’s worst managers and bought theirgreatest hits. As a manager, Michael is incompetent,narcissistic, inconsiderate, andblatantly oblivious to any of his deficiencies.His ludicrous approach to problemsolving surely leaves experienced managersgrinding their teeth. His inappropriatecomments and race-based impersonationscan send shivers down every human resourcemanager’s spine.Steve Carrell as Michael Scott in thetelevision sitcom The Office.And this is probably why the show has been so successful. Today’s workplace isgoverned by standards, policies, rules, and laws—all of which Michael flouts on a dailybasis. Leading others takes insight, passion, and know-how, none of which Michaelpossesses. Unfortunately, many managers receive little or no training about assessment,leadership, human relations, human motivation, and the like. Consequentlythey are often ill-equipped to be effective managers, just like our beloved Michael.Leadership development has been one of the greatest challenges in the world ofindustrial and organizational psychology (I/O). This field of psychology also helpsbuild teams, streamline processes, increase job satisfaction, and transform workplaceculture, among other objectives.
