Background: <strong>It</strong>’s something every mental health<br />
professional fears: following the same path as one of their<br />
patients. Working in a stressful, publicly funded mental<br />
health institution can be bad. Dealing with the aftermath<br />
of a patient suicide is worse. Enough to trigger a stress-related<br />
nervous breakdown. Enough to start her talking to<br />
that voice in her head. Enough to let the voice in her head<br />
take over once in a while.<br />
Description: This hithisu is living two lives. By day, she’s<br />
the serious psychiatrist, who thinks she’s helping her patients<br />
get better. She dresses and looks conservative. By night, the<br />
riding spirit takes over, and the changes come over her. Her<br />
eyes go wild, as does her hair. Sometimes her body seems to<br />
move in implausible ways. She dresses up in wildly clashing<br />
clothes and hits the bar scene, upsetting brain chemistry as<br />
she passes. On one exposure to her, people assume<br />
that their drink was spiked. If they start frequenting<br />
the same bars she does, they’re on the<br />
downward spiral into mental illness.<br />
Storytelling Hints: She’s quite,<br />
quite mad. A brief, stress-induced<br />
breakdown was enough to let the spirit<br />
in, and the second voice in her head is<br />
a welcome addition. MPD she can<br />
characterize and contain, and she’s<br />
impressed by the insights this<br />
new personality she’s developed<br />
is offering. She works<br />
hard to allay her colleagues’<br />
suspicions, while all the<br />
time aggravating her patients’ manias in<br />
different ways.<br />

Background: Eating was always a pleasure for her.<br />
Mommy and Pop always gave her sweeties as a treat, and as<br />
she grew older, they took her out for a meal whenever she<br />
succeeded. <strong>It</strong> was no wonder that she developed a weight<br />
problem later in life. A bad patch in her life, however,<br />
made the eating into a real problem. She lost her job and<br />
put on weight as she tried to eat herself happy. She lost her<br />
boyfriend because she’d put on so much weight. She was<br />
so miserable that she barely put up a fight when a spirit of<br />
gluttony, attracted by the hunger it craved, slipped into her<br />
head. Now she gets the best treats ever.<br />
Description: Strangely, becoming Ridden has<br />
been the best diet plan she’s ever been on. She only<br />
eats when she can get human flesh, so the weight<br />
has tumbled off her in the last few months. <strong>It</strong>’s a pity<br />
that most of her personal grooming has gone,<br />
too. Her hair is slightly disheveled, and she<br />
looks only one step away from a homeless<br />
bum, until you see the<br />
disconcertingly sharp<br />
and clean teeth when<br />
she smiles and the calculating<br />
intelligence<br />
behind the eyes.<br />
Storytelling<br />
Hints: <strong>The</strong> spirit of<br />
gluttony is in charge now,<br />
keeping its host happy and<br />
quiet with regular “treats” of<br />
human flesh. Human flesh<br />
offers more Essence, after all,<br />
and the lure of forbidden meat<br />
engenders the greatest hunger<br />
of all. <strong>The</strong> spirit has enough<br />
access to its host’s memories to<br />
be able to plunder them for information<br />
to allow borderline<br />
social interaction. <strong>It</strong>’s amazing<br />
how that’s enough to lure<br />
people into her kitchen.<br />
