CONTRIBUTORS<br />

Lisa Blackman is a Senior Lecturer in <strong>the</strong> Department of Media and<br />

Communications, Goldsmiths College, U.K., and works at <strong>the</strong> intersection<br />

of media studies and critical psychology. Her recent books include<br />

Mass Hysteria: Critical Psychology and Media Studies with Valerie Walkerdine<br />

(Palgrave, 2001) and Hearing Voices: Embodiment and Experience (Free<br />

Association Books, 2001). She is currently working on a genealogy of<br />

self-help.<br />

David Breshears is a doctoral candidate, an Assistant Instructor in <strong>the</strong><br />

Department of Communication Studies, and Assistant Director of Debate<br />

at <strong>the</strong> University of Texas-Austin. During <strong>the</strong> summer he is a Senior<br />

Instructor at <strong>the</strong> University of Texas National Institute in Forensics. His<br />

specializations include rhetorical and cultural studies. He is recipient of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Jesse H. Jones Fellowship in Communication and has published in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Journal of Law in Society. He is currently writing a dissertation about<br />

<strong>the</strong> alterations in <strong>the</strong> mentalities of racial governance in <strong>the</strong> United<br />

States during <strong>the</strong> twentieth century.<br />

Laura Briggs is Associate Professor of Women’s Studies at <strong>the</strong> University<br />

of Arizona. She holds a joint appointment in <strong>the</strong> Department of<br />

Anthropology and courtesy appointments in Department of History<br />

and Comparative Cultural and Literary Studies Program. Her primary<br />

areas of interest are in <strong>the</strong> cultural contexts of science, history of gender<br />

and science, postcolonial studies, and critical race <strong>the</strong>ory. She has<br />

published articles on <strong>the</strong> history of birth control in Puerto Rico and<br />

<strong>the</strong> question forced sterilization in journals such as differences and Signs.<br />

She is <strong>the</strong> author of Reproducing Empire: Race, Sex, and Science in <strong>the</strong> U.S.<br />
