Posteriormente,atendiendo a su mecanismo de acción, se descubrió que los antipsicóticos atípicos añadían al bloqueodel sistema dopaminérgico, fundamentalmente sobre el receptor D2, otro sobre el sistema serotoninérgico(Meltzer HY, 1989; Kapur and Remington, 1996). Además, esta segunda generación de antipsicóticos-los atípicos- actuaba más específicamente sobre el sistema mesolímbico que sobre el estriatal, lo cualles dotaba de otra diferencia farmacológica.52
