Blood
My brother wakens in the back room
just before dawn and hears branches
clicking against the upstairs windows.
Late summer of ’45 and he’s home
from a war. He’s waiting for the light
to flood the room when a voice cries out,
my voice in dreams. Later that day
he and I will tramp through the fields
at the edge of town while the grass
blows around us. He won’t ask
if the cry he heard was mine; instead
we breathe—the future coming
toward us in the elm’s black shadow,
two brothers—almost one man—
held together by what we can’t share.
Islands
Manhattan is not an island—I don’t care what you read—it’s
not an island. I can walk there from my house in Brooklyn, which
is also not an island. You may hear that Australia is a continent. I
lived there, I know it’s an island, one of many in the surrounding
southern oceans. For a week I stayed in a little cottage a hundred
miles south of Wollongong. At low tide we would walk out onto
shelves of rock & coral for miles, & I would stare out in the direc-
