ABSTRACT
The research investigates how the dramatist Manoel Carlos used a socialeducational
approach to insert the theme of violence in the telenovela Mulheres
Apaixonadas (TV Globo, 2003). By the analysis of the scenes from the fiction, was
examined how purely fictional elements mingled to information and data of social
reality in three framesof the television show: the story of violence against women, led
by teacher Raquel; the case of mistratment of the elderly, that Doris practiced against
their grandparents, Flora e Leopoldo, and the story of urban violence that killed to the
shop assistant Fernanda. The later measured the social dimension achieved by
approach of violence in the fiction in three national weekly magazines. The analysis
focused on five thematic categories: dramatic construction; informativiness of the
thematic approach; dialogue of reality; naturalness, and media coverage. Taken
together the categories were used to verify the hypothesis that issues of public
interest makes the fiction televisive a space for social debate, whose potential is
powered by elements of the television language, such as familiarity, naturalness and
emotional appeal. The result show the pedagogical function of these elements, but
relativizes de capacity for social debate because of to de small effect achieved by
telenovela in the media nationwide.
Keywords: Communication and education; telenovela; violence; social-educational
approach.
