BSc in Computer ScienceBIBEBUVAMEMDroid – an Android tablet frontend for MEMDocComputer Perception and Virtual Reality / Betreuer: Prof. Dr. Emmanuel BenoistExperte: Jean-Jacques JaquierAs in almost every field of modern science, the collection, aggregation and interpretation of data has becomecrucial in the domain of medical studies too. While clinics usually keep their records in closed, customizedsystems the MEMDoc Project of the University of Berne and its partners provides a web based and standardisedplatform. In a medical practice environment the PC browser based, solution works well, in a hospitalhowever medical staff is much more mobile and such a solution is suboptimal. Therefore MEMDroidbrings all the platforms functionality to an Android tablet device.MEMDroidMEMDroid brings the functionalityof the MEMDoc platform to Androidtablet devices. Before a usercan do anything meaningful withthe application it must be loggedin to the underlying webserversand thus to the application. TheMEMDroid application allows usersto add new patients to a studyor to search for already existingones. Once a patient is selectedthe different questionnaires of acertain study are available to theuser. The user can choose whichquestionnaire should be filled outand the application exposes thequestions according to their natureas either simple text fields or moreelaborate alternatives like dropdown lists, radio button groups oreven value range sliders. When theStartscreen of the MEMDroid applicationuser has finished filling out thequestionnaire, the answers can besaved to the server.MEMDocMEMDoc is a platform that standardisesand facilitates the collectionand handling of data for medicalstudies. The application isweb based and is built up on twodifferent web services, the socalled «module» for personal patientdata, which is usually offshoredto the study conductingmedical society. And the so called«server», which is centralised andcontains the medically relevantand anonymised user data. Forinstance MEMDoc is accessedand used by the means of a webbrowser usually running on adesktop pc or a laptop.DetailsBoth the «module» and the «server»expose SOAP-based web services. To log a user in to the systemfirst a session id must beobtained by the server, which isthen sent to the module containingthe user name and passwordwhich in return sends back themodule number, the module sessionid and a signature. By sendingthese with the original serversession id to the server the loginprocess can be completed. Afterlogging in the user data has to bereceived, to be able to determinethe department in which the userworks. This is very important forall the following steps as the departmentaffiliation determineswhich patients can be found anwhat patient data can be enteredinto the system. Before a questionnairecan be dsiplayed a patientmust either be found andselected or a new one must beentered and selected. Each ofthese steps comprises one ormore SOAP web service calls toeither the «module» or the «server»or even both servers. The questionsare displayed with Androidsnative display elements to facilitatethe process of entering the data.By hitting the save button the datawill be sent to the «server» serverand is instantly available for analysispurposes or other users treatingthe same patient.Christoph Ischti.bfh.ch167
