NOTHING WEIGHED more heavily on the conscience of the German
nation in the fifty years after World War II than the revelations
during the War Crimes trials at Nuremberg and elsewhere about
atrocities committed by the Germans and their Axis partners. The
description of those atrocities was inevitably one-sided; crimes
of equal quality, if not on the same scale, had been committed by
more than one of the warring Allied nations (Dresden; Hiroshima;
Katyn, and Bromberg are only a few of the other locations which
became synonymous with the horrors of war.) The defence lawyers
at Nuremberg were not permitted to refer to these Allied crimes
by way of mitigation, and a sense of silent injustice and grievance
dwelt upon the German people for years afterwards.
