It was difficult not to like Professor Hahn. Just before Christmas
1945, on December 22, Commander Walsh, relieving Brodie for the
holiday, brought to the scientists the news that they were about to
be flown back to Germany. Wirtz was dubious: “Who knows, he
may just have made this up so that he will have a pleasant Christmas
here.” The microphones picked up a chorus of “Rubbish!”
from the rest.
WEIZSÄCKER: To be quite honest, I would not have minded being
here another six months. They have looked after us marvellously. . .
WIRTZ: There is one solid comfort: the Commander [Eric Welsh]
and [Captain] Brodie are going to fly with us, so at least they don’t
intend to have us crash. . . . The problem is, of course, what is going to
happen to people like Diebner. We know what sort of man he is, but I
don’t think we should just drop him.
HEISENBERG: I agree. He has behaved himself very well recently.
WEIZSÄCKER: He is not a physicist in the real sense of the word,
but . . . we shall need somebody to get hold of apparatus, to look after
it, and so forth. We could very well use him for something like that.
HEISENBERG: That is roughly my idea.

Heisenberg replied that they must however do justice to the
British, who had treated them extremely well. “We should say,”
responded Wirtz, “that we were physically very well treated – and
mentally, wretchedly.”
