Weizsäcker, “I don’t believe that there is any danger of being
harmed by the Werewolves later on. “ But somehow, if they were
to work on cosmic rays for instance, they must have the use of airplanes
and balloons.
“This, of course,” remarked Weizsäcker gloomily, “could even
more easily by interpreted as ’collaboration.’”
Harteck inquired: “Do they want us to start highly qualified
work in Germany again?”
“Blackett certainly does,” opined Heisenberg. Harteck was
sceptical. “Will they for instance allow us to continue work on the
Benzinsynthesen in the chemistry of the carbohydrates? If there is
anything that interferes in the slightest with their own business, are
they likely to prohibit it?”
Heisenberg replied: “They will prevent all types of organisation
which will again make Germany an independent industrial
power.”
“I am convinced,” said Weizsäcker, “that after a few decades research
will be done again in Germany on a large scale.”
“To return to the letter to Blackett,” said Wirtz, “. . . Perhaps you
could add that he should keep this letter as private as possible.”
Heisenberg pointed out that M.I.6 and others would see it.
“It does not matter it they see it,” said Weizsäcker nervously,
“only the Werewolves shouldn’t.”
Talking about Allied control of their work, he continued: “I
would, therefore, say the control is not at all unpleasant, but rather
it is desirable, just as I think it desirable that the Allied Government
of Germany lasts as long as possible so that the Anglo-Americans
have full responsibility for whether the people starve or not. . . The
only problem is whether that will later be held against us as ’collaboration.’”
HEISENBERG: Actually, I think so
WIRTZ: If the whole thing is properly worded, I see no danger.
HEISENBERG: . . . Wouldn’t it really be the best solution if we were
