Eavesdropping on Hitler’s Reich
All ten prisoners assembled at nine P.M. that August 6, 1945 to
hear the B.B.C. news with the official announcement.
It was clear that this was no bluff. Harteck correctly pronounced
now that the Allies must have pulled it off using massspectrographs
to separate the uranium-235, “mass spectrographs
in enormous quantities,” each costing perhaps one hundred dollars,
one hundred thousand of them each producing, say, one milligram
per day.
