All ten prisoners assembled at nine P.M. that August 6, 1945 to<br />

hear the B.B.C. news with the official announcement.<br />

It was clear that this was no bluff. Harteck correctly pronounced<br />

now that the Allies must have pulled it off using massspectrographs<br />

to separate the uranium-235, “mass spectrographs<br />

in enormous quantities,” each costing perhaps one hundred dollars,<br />

one hundred thousand of them each producing, say, one milligram<br />

per day.<br />

HEISENBERG: Yes, of course, if you do it like that and they seem to<br />

have worked on that scale. 180,000 people were working on it. . .<br />

BAGGE: Goudsmit led us up the garden path.<br />

Samuel Goudsmit had assured the captives that the Americans<br />
