BLACKETT: He wants to go back to Germany?
HEISENBERG: Yes, I think so. He feels the same way as I do, [that]
we are needed in Germany and that we are not needed in the United
States.
BLACKETT: What about Korsching?
HEISENBERG: He is not a brilliant physicist, but he is a good experimenter
and he had a nice idea on the [thermal] separation of isotopes.
. .
BLACKETT: He looks a little unhappy.
HEISENBERG: He is the type of man who has never been abroad.
He is German and he has never come out of his German cities. he
thinks it is terrible to stay here, he has no work to do.
BLACKETT: Bagge?
HEISENBERG: His primary quality is great energy . . . and in so
far he has done good work. . . I don’t know whether you have seen his
papers on cosmic rays. In some ways he is a proletarian type, he came
from a proletarian family and this is one of the reasons why he went
into the [Nazi] Party, but he never was what one would call a fanatical
Nazi. In some way I like him quite well. . .
BLACKETT: He is mainly an experimenter but does a little theory?
HEISENBERG: Yes.
BLACKETT: Wirtz?
HEISENBERG: He really knows the whole game of physics. He is
an experimenter . . . he is the type of man who knows how to organise
an institute. If Wirtz had not been in our institute, we certainly would
not have come so far in the uranium business. . . Diebner is, of course,
politically perhaps the most difficult case of all. He has got his degree
in physics, but he is not really a physicist, he is more a kind of Verwaltungsmann.
He was connected with the Heereswaffenamt. He was
the organiser of this whole uranium business on a very small scale
from the beginning. . . In the beginning it was really a matter of this
Heereswaffenamt. His [superior] man was a General Schuhmann [sic.
Professor Erich Schumann]. Then Schuhmann was replaced by Esau.
BLACKETT: What would he do, if he went back?
HEISENBERG: That is one of the difficulties.
BLACKETT: There are innumerable thousands of people in Germany
who have got to find a new occupation. . . The not-so-good people will
have to find their own way.
