The letter went off on October 4, signed by Heisenberg. The<br />

“guests” became increasingly restive as no reply came. Diebner, regarded<br />

as a Nazi by his “hosts”, itched to get out.<br />

BAGGE: Tell me, what is Diebner so excited about?<br />

KORSCHING: He is quite rightly annoyed about our Nazi-nationalist<br />

English guards.<br />

On the last Tuesday in October 1945, the thirtieth, the Daily Express<br />

suggested that Otto Hahn was to work for the British at Didcot.<br />

He blurted out that that was monstrous, it might provoke the<br />

“Werewolves.” During the month the microphones, which were<br />

switched on throughout their waking hours, produced less and less<br />

of interest – except for repeated escape plans hatched by the scientists:<br />

HEISENBERG: I don’t know whether it would not be a good thing<br />

HEISENBERG: I just think that talks with the Captain are somehow<br />

futile. . . He listens to us and then passes it on to the Commander [Eric<br />

Welsh of M.I.6] They air their feelings a bit as to how unpleasant the<br />

whole thing is . . . It is impossible that it will ever reach America where<br />

a decision could be made.<br />

On November 6 Heisenberg whispered to Wirtz that he was thinking<br />

of making a dash for freedom, and seeking refuge in the Danish<br />

Embassy, where he could establish contact with Nils Bohr. Wirtz<br />

warned: “I don’t think much of anything connected with escape.<br />
