die Leute jetzt laufen lasse mit der Munition, und die wissen, wo noch
mehr Munition liegt, dann schießen sie vielleicht mich selber über den
Haufen. Eher die mich über den Haufen schießen, erschieße ich sie,
und die anderen sind durchsucht. Es ist gut, daß Sie keine Munition
haben. Sie können jetzt mit ihren Frauen, Richtung da runter, 3 km
gehen.”
Da waren sie zufrieden, fuhren ab.
Ich habe mich nie nach was gerissen. Ich habe jeden Scheissdreck
mitgemacht, aber nicht: „Ich will mit!” – das habe ich nie gemacht.
Oberstleutnant von der Heydte berichtete gegen Ende Februar
1945 im Gespräch mit Generalmajor Hans Bruhn von drei ihm
bekannten Fällen, wobei Offiziere der S.S. -Panzerdivision „Das
Reich” Verbrechen begangen hätten.
HEYDTE: I’ve experienced three instances myself. I was placed
under the command of Division „Das Reich” – actually a fantastic
Division, marvellously equipped and composed of first-rate men. I
captured two American doctors in Normandy – they were from the 1st
American Paratroop Division – and they were shot. Because I didn’t
believe it, the Divisionskommandeur gave as his reasons: ‚One looked
so Jewish and the other wasn’t up to much either.’
That was one instance. Another instance was the interrogation of an
American captain: A Bataillonskommandeur of mine was present and
he rang me up from the Gefechtsstand of an Obersturmbannführer
Fick – where the chap was being interrogated – and said, „Please come
here at once, sir. There’s been a Schweinerei here.”
I thought that the enemy must have broken through or something,
so I drove over there, and then he told me the following – I saw the
unconscious officer lying there myself, a few people were sprinkling
water over him – they had apparently stood him on a box up against a
tree, tied his hands up behind him and then kicked the box away and
interrogated him like that. That is contrary to all military honour.
BRUHN: And the third instance?
HEYDTE: The third was also with Division „Das Reich” –
