EVER since the American Lieutenant General Leslie Groves published
in his memoirs brief, tantalising extracts from the transcripts
of the conversations of the German atomic scientists secretly
interned at Farm Hall near Cambridge, England, historians tried
in vain to read the entire file.
In 1966, writing the history of the German project (The Virus
House, London & New York, 1967) I formally applied to the Cabinet
Office; access was refused both to me and to countless other
researchers. Many of the scientists were still living, but this cannot
alone have been the reason; more likely was that the presence
of Professor Carl-Friedrich von Weizsäcker, brother of the Federal
German president, caused the embarrassment.
It is known that a complete copy of the Farm Hall transcripts
was in the hands of the German Federal Government in Bonn from
about 1980 onwards; it follows that it was possibly at their request
that the British Government continued to decline to authorise
