Landschaftsarchitektur und öffentlicher
Landscape Architecture and Public Space
The Chair’s research and teaching deals with phenomena of the public space as
well as with the idea of research by design and by developing and constructing
new open spaces. The processes and conceptual designs leading to the synthesis
of good public spaces are again and again new and insufficently researched by
landscape architecture. What generates space, which mechanism is it subjected
to? Which role do social transformation processes play in the genesis of public
spaces? By generating public space the experiment plays an important role,
because only different models of experiments and numerous planning and practice
test arrangements can provide insight in public spaces and ideas for its improvement.
Here the combination of research and teaching finds its laboratory.
Besides the questions of publicity, there are questions of aesthetics, its cognition
and communication. Which images form us and which images does landscape
architecture create today? What is design? That is what we study by explorative
views and analytic collecting.
Besides these current tasks, the research of landscape architecture’s recent history
plays an important role at the Chair. The allowance of some important german
landscape architects like Alwin Seifert and Günther Grzimek is the basis
for this research. Their opuses show clearly the process of an ideologically
veiled landscape architecture to a deeply democratical conception of open space.
It is essential to develop new methods of coming to terms with the past with these
documents to make them accessible for scienctific purposes.
