Haiti – In Krisenlandschaften entwerfen
Haitis Hauptstadt Port-au-Prince war Anfang 2010 durch ein schweres Erdbeben
verwüstet worden. Die Katastrophe zerstörte 250.000 Wohnungen und tötete mindestens
ebenso viele Menschen. Seitdem gestaltet sich das Überleben als Herausforderung,
da noch immer Hunderttausende in prekären Zeltstädten leben – ohne
Zugang zu sauberem Wasser oder Arbeit.
Im Vorfeld des Entwurfsprojekts fand Mitte Oktober 2011 ein internationales
Symposium an der TU München statt. Unter dem Titel Metropolis Nonformal:
Landscape, Infrastructure and Urbanism in the Global South, lud Kurator Christian
umfangreiche Forschungsergebnisse in Port-au-Prince gesammelt hatte.
Haiti - In designing landscapes crisis
Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince was devastated by a major earthquake in early
2010. The disaster destroyed 250,000 homes and killed at least as many people.
Since then, survival has been a challenge, as hundreds of thousands are still living
in precarious tent cities - without access to clean water or work.
Prior to the design project, an international symposium took place at the TUM
in mid-October 2011. Under the title Metropolis Nonformal: Landscape, Infrastructure
and Urbanism in the Global South, curator Christian Werthmann, professor
of landscape architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and
an IAS Fellow of the TUM, invited speakers working in the “Global South” to
attend. Those who attended discussed how architects and landscape architects
can using contemporary means creatively improve the conditions in informal cities
- such as the extremely crowded favelas in Buenos Aires and São Paulo.
Building on the issues of the symposium, our Haiti project also happened in cooperation
with Christian Werthmann, who, as head of a design team from Harvard
and the MIT - School of Architecture + Planning, had already undertaken extensive
research in Port-au-Prince.
With their designs, students demonstrate that the design tools acquired at home
can be applied around the world - after a thorough analysis, even without having
visited the design location. Their strategies and concrete implementation
approaches showed their great empathy for the unfamiliar culture and exotic
landscape of Haiti.
