Schule in Äthiopien
Der Entwurf wurde als zweisemestriges Studienangebot konzipiert, wodurch eine
ausführliche Landes- und Materialrecherche, eine Reise nach Äthiopien, Tagesexkursionen
zu Martin Rauch (Lehmbauer) und Johann Bachinger (Korbflechter),
das Entwickeln alternativer Entwurfsideen und letztendlich die Durcharbeitung
einer Idee bis zu Materialexperimenten im Maßstab 1:1 möglich wurde.
Die pragmatisch erscheinenden Haltungen der Entwürfe sind insofern angemessen,
als die mögliche Umsetzung der Projekte bei allen Entscheidungen maßgebend
war. Es wurden, an europäischen Maßstäben gemessen, keine spektakulären
Gebäude entworfen. Gemessen am zeitgenössischen äthiopischen Baugeschehen
sind es jedoch trotzdem Visionen, die an den Zukunftsträumen und Vorstellungen
von Modernität und westlichem Lebensstandard rütteln. Regional verfügbare
Baustoffe sowie landesübliche Bauweisen und Handwerkstraditionen wurden mit
dem Ziel, diesen wieder Anerkennung und Wertschätzung zu verschaffen, thematisiert
und weiter entwickelt. Zweifellos eine Provokation in einem Land, in welchem
die derzeit tätige Bauindustrie Stahlbeton- und Betonsteinkonstruktionen
favorisiert.
Parallel zum Entwurfsprozess wurde in Zusammenarbeit mit Bauingenieur Studenten/innen
vom Lehrstuhl für Bauphysik von Prof. Hauser, das Innenraumklima
in den Klassenräumen simuliert. Die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse gaben wichtige
Hinweise bei der Bearbeitung der Projekte.
School in Ethiopia
This design was conceived as a two-semester course offer, during which a detailed
country and material research, a trip to Ethiopia, day Field trips to Martin Rauch
(wattle and daub builder) and Johann Bachinger (basketmaker), the development
of alternative design ideas and ultimately the working out of an idea up to material
experiments at a scale of 1:1 were made possible.
The pragmatic thrust of the designs is a product of the fact that possible implementation
of the projects was an important factor in all decisions. By European
standards, no spectacular buildings were designed. Measured by the contemporary
Ethiopian construction activity however, these are still visions that shake the
dreams of the future and ideas of modernity and Western living standards. Regionally
available building materials, as well as traditional construction methods and
common craft traditions were employed and developed with the aim of rekindling
them and giving them the recognition and appreciation they deserve. This is
undoubtedly a provocation in a country where the current construction industry
favors reinforced concrete and concrete block construction.
In parallel with the design process, the indoor climate in the classrooms was simulated
in collaboration with students of Building Engineering from the Chair of
Construction Physics by Prof. Hauser. The knowledge gained proved important
and useful during the execution of the projects.
