The focus is on one of the central inner-city territories of Frankfurt, the area of
the Deutsche Bank spanning between the Altstadtplatz on the Rossmarkt and the
financial district. With the redesign of the structural appearance of the bank within
the living textures of the city, the question of the role of architecture in the relationship
between public and global corporation arises. At the centre of the dispute
is the restructuring of the company headquarters, which expresses different levels
of the evolution of Frankfurt’s financial district in its development (founding period,
reconstruction period, existing and also planned, but never built high-rise
development). The theme of sustainability in construction should be an essential
part of the design. Social, ecological and economic issues, demographic developments
and mobility, but also the stability of aesthetic solutions, are topics that will
determine a value-oriented approach in the future.
The dynamics of the economic evolution of Frankfurt towards a banking city has
led to overlaps in the city structure at the interface between the old town and the
financial district in the second half of the last century, making a structural reorganisation
of the area appear necessary. Against the backdrop of a possible new
high-rise development, which will dominate the Frankfurt skyline due to its exceptional
maximum height of 200m, the bank’s business rivalry acquires a symbolic
dimension.
