Typologies of the city - every city gets the homes it deserves!
The city and its buildings are in a reciprocal relationship, which is characterised
by rule, application, modification and exception. Houses and house types do not
usually arise accidentally. Rather, they are a mirror of the conditions of their time.
The city and its given structural conditions and specifications serve as the framework
in which structural objects manifest themselves. These reveal after a few
decades identifiable typologies that can serve the architect almost as a manual or
guide, allowing architecture to appear, in this sense, less an art of invention than
an artful application of rules and, indeed, knowledge. The updating of such typologies
is an area truly deserving of investigation and forms the enthralling chapters
of this narrative of house and city.
Stachus Munich - In the heart of the city
Today, between main station and Stachus, there is a large department store from
the 70s and the five-star hotel, Königshof, which is, with its distinctive panoramic
restaurant, placed exactly on the axis of Munich’s pedestrian zone. The
the position of the two large city buildings is as prominent as the suggestion that
the architectural and urban spatial potential of this area is far from being
exhausted is bold. The competition remit is a complete re-planning which is
capable of giving the area a new identity. The goal is the almost paradigmatic
reappropriation of the current mono-functional location for diverse uses appropriate
to the heart of the city.
