Lehre Study
Sharing Living Meeting Extending - Collective Living in Munich
In this semester the studio will explore the condition of collective living through
the concept of the ‘satellite apartment’ which has been emerging from Switzerland
and other countries in the last few years. The introduction of this concept,
from forward thinking Housing Associations, reflects a growing demand of individuals
of a mature age or of family groups for a shared living environment
which provides both a degree of privacy and of community within a non-familial
household. Independence is achieved through a set of small private spaces which
are separate but in close proximity to larger shared spaces.
This concept fosters mutual support and a sharing of resources and it highlights
the need for housing design to continue to evolve to suit the demands of a changing
society. This studio seeks to resist conventions and instead to speculate on
living environments which suit the ever more complex domestic life that we experience
every day.
We shall look carefully at what lies around us and at historical precedent and
we shall explore spatial relationships within the dwelling through means of
model making and open discussion. In this way we expect to rediscover the
essence of a home, the feeling of comfort and the overriding atmosphere that
makes a home what it is.
An essential part of this study is to understand and explore the relationship
between private space and the public domain, not only within the interior but
also to the city, to the urban space of the street, the yard and the spaces between
buildings. A neighbourhood in Munich has been selected to provide the context
for this study and emphasis will be placed throughout the semester on the relationships
individual projects make to the atmosphere and real life situation as
found.
