A wooden house on the Princes’ Islands: Building documentation, building
research and restoration plan for an historic wooden house on the island of
Büyükada near Istanbul
This study sought from the start to present an approach that is practised in the
daily routine of historic conservation, from building research to the concrete development
of an historic building. The support from the DAI on site made access to
the property possible in the first place.
The aim was the exemplary research of a historic building, beginning with its
comprehensive documentation; based on this and on the consultation of written
and oral sources, the construction history of the house was compiled. Lastly, there
was the question of how such a building could be meaningfully used again and
which specific interventions would be required to make this possible.
The working steps included a deformation-true survey of floor plans, views and
sections, as well as the graphic and photographic documentation of all relevant
details produced on site. This included architectural features , as well as the fixtures
and fittings.
On this basis, the building history of the mid-19th-century house could be largely
reconstructed. This was significant inasmuch as, in the subsequent question of a
further use, decisions could be made that were oriented towards the history of the
house and respected its original purpose.
The restoration plan is thus based on the previous working steps and proposes a
strategy that is strongly oriented towards the given conditions. This can be seen
both in the new uses, as well as in the type of interventions and the materials used.
Graduiertenkolleg „Naumburger Dom“
solcher Fragen an. Sie kommen aus sechs Fachbereichen: Kunsttechnologie
und Konservierungswissenschaften, Naturwissenschaften, Baugeschichte und
Bauforschung, Kunstgeschichte, Mittelalterliche Geschichte/Landesgeschichte
Graduate College „Naumburg Cathedral“
Despite the importance of the Naumburg Cathedral, key questions about its West
Choir with the world-famous sculptures remain unanswered. As part of a graduate
programme of the Volkswagen Foundation, eleven PhD students are addressing
such issues. They come from six departments: Art Technology and Conservation
Sciences, Natural Sciences, History of Architecture and Construction, Art History,
Medieval History / Regional History and Economic Geography and Tourism
Research. The close links and cross-disciplinary exchanges make the college a
model of its kind. Two doctoral candidates from the TUM are involved, focussing
on the founding figures, and on the rood screen in the west choir. Questions about
architectural history, construction technology, about the technical process of the
stone selection to installation of the sculptures are of interest.
