Construction knowledge of early modernism, Šuchov’s strategies in economic
building with iron.
Vladimir Šuchov was one of the outstanding constructors of the late 19th and
early 20th century with a significance far beyond his native Russia. In the surrounding
area of Nizhny Novgorod at the middle Volga, a 130 meter high lattice
mast for carrying a power line across the river, a water tower and several industrial
buildings have been preserved. All these objects are currently disused and
therefore their existence is under severe threat. This is especially true for the
pylons. Only one of the original six has been preserved and even this one is awaiting
demolition. In 2006, a joint team from five universities initiated, via exploratory
meetings on site, an interdisciplinary research programme for the examination
of these structures and for their rescue. The lightweight constructions by the engineer
V.G. Šuchov are among the most ambitious and most original designs in the
history of iron construction.
The aim is to find answers to problems posed by the history of building technology
and industrialisation. These questions are worked on by an interdisciplinary
research project staff. Archival research, historical building research, expertise in
design history and engineering methods are required. One focus is laid on the
investigation of hyperboloidal towers, one of Šuchov’s most important innovations.
Overall, Šuchov’s work should receive extensive appreciation within the context
of the international history of design.
Die Architektur des Heiligtums von Despotiko, Inselgruppe bei Paros/Kykladen,
Griechenland
Jh. v.
The architecture of the Shrine of Despotiko archipelago in Paros/Cyclades, Greece
The sanctuary of Despotiko in Antiparos in the centre of the Cyclades islands is
an important architectural ensemble from the 6th Century BC, which was expanded
in the classical period and changed. This long known, but largely unexplored
place of worship has been excavated and studied scientifically by Greek archaeologists
since 1996. At the centre of their work are the rich archaeological finds
of the period from the 9th to 6th Centuries. Hitherto unknown are the architectural
context, the function and exact dating of the exposed building remains, which
are to be investigated by the TUM funded by the DFG. Mapping the creation,
development and demise of this centuries-old, regionally significant island sanctuary
are the objective of this research project between Building Research and the
Archaeology of Greek colleagues.
