The culture of the facade - Metropolitan Building in Milan
This semester we are learning from Milan and design a metropolitan building
on a selected site in the city. The main focus is on the making of facades, working
in relation to street, proportion of openings and walls, depth, relief, material.
This work will be informed also by consideration of the inner structuring
and organisation of different uses. Both will be instrumental in offering ideas
about the external expression and the studio will be encouraging innovative and
unconventional thinking in both structure and use - all contributing to a modernday
expression of an urban building.
The objective is to develop and present a clear urban strategy for the building
and its façade. To do this you will have to develop the organisation of the building
and its proposed mix of uses. Starting with a study of precedent buildings,
their urban plan, façade and organisational structure shall be examined forensically.
Following the field trip individual sites will be developed. Part-facade
relief models will be used to investigate the material qualities of the surface and
the detail of openings.
Studio Munich – Säbener Straße
Studio Munich is a recent enterprise initiated by Professor Bruno Krucker and
Professor Stephen Bates operating within the Studio Krucker Bates Chair of
Urbanism and Housing at the TU. The Studio invites between 8-10 high-achieving
students per semester to work closely with both Professors and Assistant
Katharina Leuschner within a design office environment.
The studio will carry out exploratory studies, scenarios of development, test
planning and specific building designs for projects in and around the city of
Munich. Working closely with project partners ranging from Housing Associations,
Housing developers and the Stadt München Planning department amongst
others, the studio will work on live projects in the city, engaging with current
debate on housing and development issues and seeking to offer realistic and
effective solutions to real problems.
