2.6.2.2 The mechanical ventilation systems <strong>for</strong> stations and staircase<br />

pressurisation where required under Cl.2.2.5.6 shall comply<br />

with SS 553 Code of Practice <strong>for</strong> Mechanical Ventilation and<br />

Air-condition<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Build<strong>in</strong>gs, unless as here<strong>in</strong> modified.<br />

(a) The mechanical ventilation of the firemen’s staircase<br />

shall be ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed at higher positive pressure with<br />

respect to the mechanical ventilation system of the<br />

adjacent fire-fight<strong>in</strong>g lobby.<br />

(b) Duct cover<strong>in</strong>gs, duct l<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>gs and flexible connection<br />

materials shall be non-combustible. However, if it is<br />

necessary to use combustible materials, it shall have a<br />

surface flame spread rat<strong>in</strong>g of not lower than Class 0.<br />

(c) (i) Thermal <strong>in</strong>sulation materials <strong>for</strong> pipework<br />

together with vapour barrier l<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>gs and<br />

adhesives shall have a surface flame spread of<br />

not lower than Class 0.<br />

(ii) Notwithstand<strong>in</strong>g the requirements of sub-clause<br />

(c)(i), the use of plastic and foam rubber<br />

<strong>in</strong>sulation materials of a lower classification is<br />

permissible only <strong>in</strong> above-ground stations if:<br />

* The material is the self ext<strong>in</strong>guish<strong>in</strong>g type;<br />

* The <strong>in</strong>sulation material is covered by or<br />

encased <strong>in</strong> a metal sheath or hybrid plaster<br />

or other non-combustible cladd<strong>in</strong>g material.<br />

[Note: Any open<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the element of structure or<br />

other part of a build<strong>in</strong>g penetrated by the<br />

pipework shall be effectively fire-stopped by<br />

replacement of the <strong>in</strong>sulation material at the<br />

junction of penetration with fire resistant<br />

material hav<strong>in</strong>g equal fire rat<strong>in</strong>g.]<br />

(d) Rooms hav<strong>in</strong>g no other usage than hous<strong>in</strong>g air<br />

handl<strong>in</strong>g equipment or package units and their<br />

associated electrical controls are not regarded as areas<br />

of high risk.<br />
