2.1.2.5 Area of Refuge<br />

(a) In the station under consideration, an area of refuge is<br />

an area adequately separated from the rest of the<br />

station by fire resist<strong>in</strong>g construction (see Section 2.3<br />

<strong>for</strong> details), and evacuees from the rest of the station<br />

enter the area of refuge us<strong>in</strong>g an external corridor that<br />

l<strong>in</strong>ks this area to the rest of the station. An area of<br />

refuge may serve as required exit <strong>in</strong> lieu of the<br />

provisions given under Cl.2.1.2.27.<br />

(b) An area of refuge may also be an area <strong>in</strong> an adjo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

station which is separated from the station under<br />

consideration by fire resist<strong>in</strong>g construction and<br />

evacuees similarly enter this area of refuge us<strong>in</strong>g an<br />

external corridor.<br />

(c) An area of refuge shall always be accessible.<br />

2.1.2.6 An atrium with<strong>in</strong> a station is a large open space created by<br />

an open<strong>in</strong>g, or a series of open<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>in</strong> floor assemblies, thus<br />

connect<strong>in</strong>g two or more storeys. Atrium is covered at the top<br />

and is used <strong>for</strong> purposes other than those associated with<br />

small shafts, such as <strong>for</strong> stairs, elevators and various<br />

services. The sides of the atrium may be open to all floors, to<br />

some of the floors or closed to all or some floors by nonrated<br />

or rated fire-resistance construction.<br />

2.1.2.7 Backlayer<strong>in</strong>g means the reversal of movement of smoke and<br />

hot gases counter to the direction of the ventilation airflow.<br />

2.1.2.8 Basement Storey Basement<br />

(a) A storey of a station which is below the first storey<br />

and the floor of which is situated at such a level that<br />

more than half the height of such storey is below the<br />

level of the ground adjo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g its perimeter walls <strong>for</strong><br />

more than half the length of such perimeter walls, and<br />

(b) Where the station has no storey above ground, a<br />

storey the floor of which is situated at such a level that<br />

either the whole storey is below ground or more than<br />

half the height of such storey is below the level of the<br />

ground adjo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g its perimeter walls <strong>for</strong> more than<br />

half the length of such perimeter walls.<br />
