(d) Ventilation<br />

2.2.5.12 ESCALATORS<br />

(i) Except as permitted by sub-clause (ii), all<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternal exit passageways shall be naturally<br />

ventilated by fixed ventilation open<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> an<br />

external wall, such ventilation open<strong>in</strong>gs be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

not less than 15 per cent of the floor area of the<br />

exit passageway, and<br />

(ii) Internal exit passageways that cannot be<br />

naturally ventilated shall be mechanically<br />

ventilated to comply with the requirements <strong>in</strong><br />

Section 2.6.<br />

(a) Escalators not fire-separated from the public floor<br />

area shall be considered as contribut<strong>in</strong>g to the means<br />

of escape capacity.<br />

(b) Escalators shall not account <strong>for</strong> more than 50% of the<br />

exit capacity at any one level.<br />

(c) Because of the possibilities of ma<strong>in</strong>tenance or<br />

malfunction, one escalator at each station shall be<br />

considered as be<strong>in</strong>g out of service <strong>in</strong> calculat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

egress requirements. The escalators chosen shall be<br />

the one hav<strong>in</strong>g the most adverse effect upon exit<strong>in</strong>g<br />

capacities.<br />

(d) The width of the escalator shall be the width of the<br />

step tread.<br />

(e) Escalators shall be provided with flat steps at<br />

land<strong>in</strong>gs which <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> number proportionally<br />

with the rise of the escalator as follows:<br />

Rise Number of Flat Steps<br />

Up to 6 m Not less than 2<br />

6 – 18 m Not less than 3<br />

Over 18 m Not less than 4<br />

(f) Where operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the direction of exit travel,<br />

escalators shall be permitted to be left <strong>in</strong> the<br />

operat<strong>in</strong>g mode dur<strong>in</strong>g evacuation.<br />
