2.3.8.6 Any door fitted to an open<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> protect<strong>in</strong>g structure shall<br />

have fire resistance <strong>for</strong> not less than half the period required<br />

by other provisions of the <strong>Standard</strong> <strong>for</strong> the protect<strong>in</strong>g<br />

structure surround<strong>in</strong>g the open<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

2.3.8.7 A protected shaft which conta<strong>in</strong>s an exit staircase shall<br />

comply with the follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

(a) It shall not conta<strong>in</strong> any pipe convey<strong>in</strong>g gas or<br />

combustible liquid.<br />

(b) It shall not conta<strong>in</strong> any services that are not solely<br />

serv<strong>in</strong>g the same exit staircase except <strong>for</strong>:<br />

(i) Spr<strong>in</strong>kler pipe, dry riser pipe, hosereel pipe, fire<br />

alarm system cable <strong>in</strong> metal conduit; and<br />

(ii) UPVC or cast iron ra<strong>in</strong> water downpipes serv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the roof directly above the exit staircase, and not<br />

routed through anywhere outside the staircase.<br />

(iii) Telecommunication cables, e.g. leaky coaxial<br />

cables (LCX) and PA system cables.<br />

(c) The protect<strong>in</strong>g structure shall be constructed of<br />

masonry or drywall. If drywall construction is used,<br />

the follow<strong>in</strong>g conditions shall be complied with:<br />

(i) Drywall shall be non-combustible; and<br />

(ii) Drywall shall have the requisite fire resistance<br />

rat<strong>in</strong>g at least equal to that of elements of<br />

structure; and<br />

(iii) Drywall shall meet the criteria, <strong>in</strong> terms of<br />

impact and deflection per<strong>for</strong>mance, when<br />

subject to the tests of BS 5588 Pt 5 Appendix A<br />

and BS 5234 Pt 2; and<br />

(iv) Drywall shall meet the criteria, <strong>in</strong> terms of water<br />

absorption and bend<strong>in</strong>g strength per<strong>for</strong>mance,<br />

when subject to test of BS1230 Pt 1 (<strong>for</strong> gypsum<br />

plaster board) or ISO 1896 (<strong>for</strong> calcium silicate<br />

or cement board).<br />

(v) There shall have at least two <strong>in</strong>dependent exits.<br />
