(d) The protected shaft shall be vented <strong>in</strong> accordance with<br />

SS 550 Code of Practice <strong>for</strong> Installation, Operation<br />

and Ma<strong>in</strong>tenance of Electric Passenger and Goods<br />

Lifts. The vents shall be so arranged as to <strong>in</strong>duce<br />

exhaust ventilation of the shaft. Where vents could<br />

not be provided because of the location of the lift<br />

shaft, ventilation duct protected by drywall comply<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with Cl. 2.3.8.8(b) serv<strong>in</strong>g as ventilation of the shaft<br />

may be provided <strong>in</strong> accordance with Section 2.6.<br />

(e) Open<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>for</strong> the passage of lift cables from the lift<br />

shaft <strong>in</strong>to the lift motor room shall be as small as<br />

practicable.<br />

(f) Transom panel above lift entrance shall not be<br />

considered as part of the entrance and shall there<strong>for</strong>e<br />

con<strong>for</strong>m to the fire resistance requirements of the<br />

protected structure.<br />

(g) If it serves any basement storey and not adjo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g any<br />

void connect<strong>in</strong>g to upper levels or any external spaces,<br />

there shall be provided a lobby enclosed by walls<br />

hav<strong>in</strong>g fire resistance of not less than 1 hour and fire<br />

door of not less than half an hour.<br />

Exception: The requirement <strong>for</strong> lobbies shall not<br />

apply where lift is located <strong>in</strong> the public<br />

areas which serves not more than 3<br />

basement storeys with<strong>in</strong> the same<br />

compartment.<br />

2.3.8.9 A protected shaft used <strong>for</strong> the enclosure of services shall<br />

comply with the follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

(a) The protect<strong>in</strong>g structure <strong>for</strong> protected shaft conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

mechanical ventilation ducts serv<strong>in</strong>g exit staircases,<br />

exit passageways, smoke-stop, and fire-fight<strong>in</strong>g<br />

lobbies which pass through one or more floors shall<br />

be constructed of masonry or drywall. Such shaft<br />

shall be completely compartmented from the rest of<br />

the shaft space conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g other ducts or any other<br />

services <strong>in</strong>stallations. Protected shaft conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g ducts<br />

serv<strong>in</strong>g other areas which pass through two or more<br />

floors shall be constructed of drywall. If the<br />

protect<strong>in</strong>g structure <strong>for</strong> the protected shaft is<br />

constructed of drywall, the follow<strong>in</strong>g conditions shall<br />

be complied with:<br />

(i) Drywall shall be non-combustible; and<br />
