2.3.9.3 Pipes<br />

(a) Pipes which pass through a separat<strong>in</strong>g wall,<br />

compartment wall or compartment floor shall be kept<br />

as small as possible and fire-stopped around the pipe.<br />

The nom<strong>in</strong>al <strong>in</strong>ternal diameter of the pipe shall be not<br />

more than the relevant dimension given <strong>in</strong> Table<br />

2.3.9A with the exception of pipes hav<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

necessary fire resistance when tested to BS 476: Part<br />

20 or other acceptable standards. Clear spac<strong>in</strong>g<br />

between pipes shall be m<strong>in</strong>imum 50mm or ½-diameter<br />

of the largest pipe, whichever is the larger.<br />

Exception: Emergency standby diesel generator steel<br />

exhaust pipes connected directly to the external.<br />

(b) In additional to sub-clause (a), fuel and vent pipes <strong>for</strong><br />

emergency standby diesel generators and fuel tanks<br />

located outside the room they served shall be enclosed<br />

<strong>in</strong> construction hav<strong>in</strong>g fire resistance of not less than 2<br />

hours. They shall not be located <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>take/fresh air vent<br />

shaft.<br />

2.3.9.4 Ventilation duct which passes directly through a<br />

compartment wall or compartment floor shall comply with<br />

the follow<strong>in</strong>g -<br />

(a) Where the ventilation duct does not <strong>for</strong>m a protected<br />

shaft or is not conta<strong>in</strong>ed with<strong>in</strong> a protect<strong>in</strong>g structure,<br />

(i) The duct shall be fitted with a fire damper where<br />

it passes through the compartment wall or<br />

compartment floor, and<br />

(ii) The open<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> the duct shall be kept as small as<br />

practicable and any gap around the fire damper<br />

shall be fire-stopped.<br />

(b) Where the ventilation duct <strong>for</strong>ms a protected shaft or is<br />

conta<strong>in</strong>ed with<strong>in</strong> a protect<strong>in</strong>g structure, the duct shall<br />

be:<br />

(i) Fitted with fire dampers at the <strong>in</strong>lets to the shaft<br />

and outlets from it, and<br />

(ii) Constructed and l<strong>in</strong>ed with materials <strong>in</strong><br />

accordance with the requirements <strong>in</strong> Section 2.6.<br />

(c) The <strong>in</strong>stallation of ventilation ducts and fire dampers<br />

shall comply with the requirements <strong>in</strong> Section 2.6.<br />
