FIRE FIGHTING PROVISION FOR STATIONS<br />
2.4.1.1 The purpose of this Section of the <strong>Standard</strong> is to make<br />
provision <strong>for</strong> space around stations to enable effective<br />
mount<strong>in</strong>g of rescue and external fire fight<strong>in</strong>g operations.<br />
2.4.2 PROVISION FOR EXTERNAL ACCESS TO STATION<br />
FOR FIRE FIGHTING AND ACCESSIBILITY OF SITE<br />
TO FIRE FIGHTING APPLIANCES<br />
2.4.2.1 Access open<strong>in</strong>gs along external walls of stations, firemen's<br />
staircase <strong>for</strong> underground stations, fire eng<strong>in</strong>e accessway and<br />
fire eng<strong>in</strong>e access road shall be provided <strong>for</strong> fire fight<strong>in</strong>g and<br />
rescue operations.<br />
Exception: Access open<strong>in</strong>g and fire eng<strong>in</strong>e accessway are not<br />
required <strong>for</strong> s<strong>in</strong>gle storey structure of stations<br />
above ground level.<br />
2.4.2.2 ACCESS OPENING<br />
(a) Open<strong>in</strong>gs on the external wall <strong>for</strong> external fire fight<strong>in</strong>g<br />
and rescue operation. Access open<strong>in</strong>gs shall <strong>in</strong>clude<br />
unobstructed external wall open<strong>in</strong>gs, w<strong>in</strong>dows, glazed<br />
wall panels or access panels. W<strong>in</strong>dows, doors, wall<br />
panels or access panels must be readily openable from<br />
the <strong>in</strong>side and outside, unless fitted by breakable<br />
glaz<strong>in</strong>g. Inside and outside of access open<strong>in</strong>gs shall be<br />
unobstructed at all times dur<strong>in</strong>g the occupancy of the<br />
station.<br />
(b) Where an external wall which faces the accessway has<br />
external open<strong>in</strong>gs on each storey level that meet the<br />
requirements of sub-clauses below, there is no need to<br />
designate any access open<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
(c) Panels to access open<strong>in</strong>gs shall be posted with either a<br />
red or orange triangle of equal sides (m<strong>in</strong>imum 150mm<br />
on each side), which can be upright or <strong>in</strong>verted, on the<br />
external side of the wall and with word<strong>in</strong>gs "<strong>Fire</strong><br />
Fight<strong>in</strong>g Access - Do Not Obstruct" of at least 25mm<br />
height on the <strong>in</strong>ternal side.<br />
