2.1.1 SCOPE<br />
PART II - RAPID TRANSIT STATION AND TRAINWAY<br />
SECTION 2.1<br />
GENERAL<br />
Part II of this <strong>Standard</strong> shall cover the fire protection and life<br />
safety requirements <strong>for</strong> underground, surface, and elevated<br />
<strong>Rapid</strong> <strong>Transit</strong> <strong>Systems</strong> <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g transit stations and<br />
tra<strong>in</strong>ways. <strong>Transit</strong> stations shall perta<strong>in</strong> to stations<br />
accommodat<strong>in</strong>g only passengers and employees of the <strong>Rapid</strong><br />
<strong>Transit</strong> <strong>Systems</strong> and <strong>in</strong>cidental occupancies <strong>in</strong> the stations.<br />
2.1.2 DEFINITIONS<br />
2.1.2.1 Aboveground station means a station with its tra<strong>in</strong>way<br />
located at or above ground level.<br />
2.1.2.2 Aboveground tra<strong>in</strong>way means that portion of the guideway<br />
which are supported by elevated structure or ground level<br />
structure or embankment or cut slope.<br />
2.1.2.3 Ancillary area means the non-public areas used to house or<br />
conta<strong>in</strong> operat<strong>in</strong>g, ma<strong>in</strong>tenance, or support equipment and<br />
functions. It shall also <strong>in</strong>clude staff rooms, locker rooms, and<br />
general purpose offices.<br />
2.1.2.4 Area of Station<br />
(a) The area of any storey of a station or compartment<br />
shall be taken to be the total area of that storey<br />
bounded by the <strong>in</strong>ner f<strong>in</strong>ished surfaces of the<br />
enclos<strong>in</strong>g walls or, on any side where there is no<br />
enclos<strong>in</strong>g walls, by the outermost edge of the floor on<br />
that side.<br />
(b) The area of any room or space shall be taken to be the<br />
total area of its floor bounded by the <strong>in</strong>ner f<strong>in</strong>ished<br />
surfaces of the walls <strong>for</strong>m<strong>in</strong>g the room or space.<br />
(c) The area of any part of a roof shall be taken to be the<br />
actual visible area of such part measured on a plane<br />
parallel to the pitch of the roof.<br />
