1.1.1 SCOPE<br />

GENERAL<br />
1.1.1.1 The <strong>Standard</strong> shall cover fire protection and life safety<br />
requirements <strong>for</strong> underground, surface, and elevated <strong>Rapid</strong><br />
<strong>Transit</strong> <strong>Systems</strong> <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong>ways, transit stations, and<br />
tra<strong>in</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>tenance depot, on-l<strong>in</strong>e electric substation and <strong>Rapid</strong><br />
<strong>Transit</strong> System facility build<strong>in</strong>gs. <strong>Transit</strong> stations shall<br />
perta<strong>in</strong> to stations accommodat<strong>in</strong>g only passengers and<br />
employees of the <strong>Rapid</strong> <strong>Transit</strong> <strong>Systems</strong> and <strong>in</strong>cidental<br />
occupancies <strong>in</strong> the stations.<br />
This <strong>Standard</strong> shall not cover requirements <strong>for</strong> the follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />
(a) Conventional freight or passengers railroad systems<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g those that provide commuter services.<br />
(b) Buses and trolley coaches.<br />
(c) Any other system of transportation not <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> the<br />
def<strong>in</strong>ition of <strong>Rapid</strong> <strong>Transit</strong> <strong>Systems</strong>.<br />
1.1.2 PURPOSE<br />
1.1.2.1 The purpose of this <strong>Standard</strong> is to establish m<strong>in</strong>imum<br />
requirements that will provide an acceptable degree of safety<br />
from fire and its related hazards.<br />
1.1.3 CHARACTERISTICS OF FIRE SAFETY<br />
1.1.3.1 <strong>Fire</strong> safety on a <strong>Rapid</strong> <strong>Transit</strong> System shall be achieved<br />
through a composite of facility design, operat<strong>in</strong>g equipment<br />
and hardware, procedures, and software subsystems that are<br />
<strong>in</strong>tegrated to provide requirements <strong>for</strong> the protection of life<br />
and property from the effects of fire. The level of fire safety<br />
desired <strong>for</strong> the whole system shall be achieved by <strong>in</strong>tegrat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the required levels <strong>for</strong> each subsystem.<br />
