(c) The smoke purg<strong>in</strong>g system design shall comply with<br />

the follow<strong>in</strong>g requirements:<br />

(i) M<strong>in</strong>imum of two (2) sets of smoke purg<strong>in</strong>g fans<br />

shall be provided. Each fan shall be capable of<br />

achiev<strong>in</strong>g m<strong>in</strong>imum 50% of the design<br />

extraction/supply air flow rates.<br />

(ii) Velocity of <strong>in</strong>duced air across the doorways and<br />

the passageways shall not exceed 5 metres per<br />

second. When the replacement air is taken<br />

through <strong>in</strong>let air ventilators or doorways, devices<br />

shall be <strong>in</strong>corporated to automatically open such<br />

<strong>in</strong>let ventilators and doors to admit replacement<br />

air upon activation of the emergency ventilation<br />

system.<br />

(iii) Smoke extract grilles shall be adequately<br />

distributed to ensure that there is no stagnant<br />

region with<strong>in</strong> the area of operation.<br />

(iv) Smoke purg<strong>in</strong>g duct passes through other fire<br />

compartment of higher rat<strong>in</strong>g, the duct shall be<br />

constructed to have the rat<strong>in</strong>g as that of the<br />

compartment.<br />

(v) Supply and exhaust fans shall be electrically<br />

<strong>in</strong>terlocked such that the failure of the exhaust fan<br />

shall automatically shut down the correspond<strong>in</strong>g<br />

supply fan.<br />

(vi) The purge rate shall be at least 9 air changes per<br />

hour.<br />

(vii) The smoke purg<strong>in</strong>g system shall be activated<br />

automatically by the station fire alarm system. In<br />

addition, a remote manual start-stop switch shall<br />

be located at fire command centre, or <strong>in</strong> the<br />

absence of a fire command centre <strong>in</strong> the station,<br />

at the ma<strong>in</strong> fire alarm panel on the first storey.<br />

Visual <strong>in</strong>dication of the operational status of the<br />

smoke purg<strong>in</strong>g system shall also be provided<br />

with this remote control.<br />

(viii) Horizontal ducts shall be fabricated from heavy<br />

gauge steel (1.2 mm thick).<br />
