NOTES ON THE USE OF INTUMESCENT PAINTS FOR PROTECTION TO<br />
STRUCTURAL STEEL MEMBERS OF STATIONS<br />
H.1 Scope<br />
H.1.1 Intumescent pa<strong>in</strong>t is allowed to be used to protect the<br />
structural steel members of stations to achieve the required<br />
fire resistance.<br />
H.1.2 For stations of habitable height not more than 24m,<br />
<strong>in</strong>tumescent pa<strong>in</strong>t is allowed to be used to protect the<br />
structural steel columns and beams.<br />
H.1.3 For stations of habitable height more than 24m, <strong>in</strong>tumescent<br />
pa<strong>in</strong>t is allowed to be used to protect only the structural steel<br />
beams, exclud<strong>in</strong>g load transfer beams.<br />
H.2 <strong>Standard</strong>s<br />
H.2.1 The <strong>in</strong>tumescent pa<strong>in</strong>t shall be subjected to the fire resistance<br />
test as detailed <strong>in</strong> BS 476 Pt 20/21 or its equivalent.<br />
H.2.2 The <strong>in</strong>tumescent pa<strong>in</strong>t shall also be subjected to weather<strong>in</strong>g<br />
tests as detailed <strong>in</strong> BS 8202: Pt 2. <strong>Fire</strong> test <strong>for</strong> fire resistance<br />
per<strong>for</strong>mance shall be conducted on the specimens after the<br />
weather tests. The fire resistance rat<strong>in</strong>g of the tested specimen<br />
shall not be less than 75% of the orig<strong>in</strong>al prototype.<br />
H.2.3 The <strong>in</strong>tumescent pa<strong>in</strong>t shall be listed under the Product List<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Scheme, adm<strong>in</strong>istered by respective build<strong>in</strong>g material<br />
certification bodies.<br />
H.3 Plan Submission<br />
H.3.1 The project QP shall submit a separate set of plans <strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the locations of the structural steel members that are/will be<br />
coated with <strong>in</strong>tumescent pa<strong>in</strong>t.<br />
H.3.2 If the station exceeds 24m <strong>in</strong> habitable height, a fire safety<br />
report shall be submitted together with the plan.<br />
H.4 Signage<br />
H.4.1 A signage depict<strong>in</strong>g the follow<strong>in</strong>g m<strong>in</strong>imum <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation shall<br />
be fixed at a conspicuous location:<br />
