(6) Enforce adherence to Sphere Project Minimum Standards on water and<br />
sanitation. Develop plans to protect water from contamination by continuous<br />
water treatment and health education awareness in the disaster affected areas.<br />
(7) Produce IEC material on health and hygiene in relation to water and sanitation.<br />
(8) Organize awareness programmes for communities, relief workers and local<br />
CBOs/NGOs.<br />
b. Emergency <strong>Response</strong><br />
(1) Designate a representative to the DEOC.<br />
(2) Arrange assessment of water and sanitation schemes damaged by the disaster<br />
and prepare plan for fast track rehabilitation.<br />
(3) Set up community water supply system in relief camps with water treatment<br />
system.<br />
(4) Provide safe drinking water according to the Sphere Project Minimum<br />
Standards to the affected population.<br />
(5) Deploy teams to set up temporary new water supply system for affected<br />
population.<br />
(6) Conduct water quality testing on regular basis to ensure the minimum<br />
standards of the quality of water.<br />
(7) Ensure that sanitation system is functioning in relief camps and make proper<br />
arrangements for drainage in the camps/temporary emergency shelters.<br />
(8) Facilitate local and INGOs working on the water and sanitation in emergency.<br />
(9) Exercise vigilance about any disease outbreak disease because of water and<br />
sanitary conditions and remain prepared to deal with any epidemic.<br />
(10) Prepare a detailed report and disseminate it widely. Document lesson learnt<br />
5. Education Department<br />
from the response experiences and incorporate same in future planning.<br />
a. Emergency Preparedness<br />
(1) Finalize emergency preparedness plan.<br />
(2) Prepare hazard specific contingency plan and allocate resources for<br />
preparedness and emergency response activities.<br />
(3) Compile inventory of schools with number of rooms and water and sanitation<br />
facilities and share it with DDMA.<br />
(4) Organize and conduct trainings for teachers and students on emergency<br />
response in collaboration with DDMA, Social Welfare Department and Pakistan<br />
Red Crescent Society.<br />
(5) Coordinate with PHE Department for the provision of water and sanitation<br />
facilities in school buildings in disaster prone districts.
